Ten Percent Recs

I watch Farscape fanvids. A lot.

#7: Square One, by Leviathan

A vid that makes Farscape feel like the sf show it is. Dealing with John, and wormholes. And Earth, and identity (a bit, anyway). Nice flow. Very rhythm-sensitive editing, making good use of rhythmic variation.

Right. After a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong pause, how about some self-aware, angsty gun-fetishism to start off the new year, and a - hopefully - longer stretch of semi-regular recs here?

This is, of course, a blatant misrepresentation (*rewatches* - or maybe not?) of beccatoria's first FS vid in years, "Gunz yo". (Go check out her Battlestar Galactica vids, too, they're brilliant!)

Find the vid here.

Hmpf rambles:

Yegads, another shippy vid! ;-) Okay, I'm sorry, I know I said I wouldn't rec that many shippy J/A vids, but, the truth is, this is Farscape - the greatest sf romance TV has ever seen. So, there's bound to be a lot of J/A vids in the fandom, and some percentage of them are bound to be brilliant. It would be a shame not to rec them. So, here we go with another brilliant shippy vid:

Right. Something to relieve the unrelenting angst of the last three recs:

What's it about:

For party boy John, life in the Uncharted Territories is a weekend that never ends... (so, kind of an AU vid, really. *g*) Pilot on bongos! Scorpy on drums! Dancing!D'Argo! Check that ass, boy! Whoops, I mean girl; girl girl girl. :-D

#3: The Pain Gets Worse, by Tazey

I am not an intellectually sophisticated vid watcher. Many of the best current vidders and their audiences approach vids as a complex form of multimedia poetry, in which music, frequently obscure lyrics, and images are (re)combined in subtle and surprising ways so as to tease out new (or hidden) meanings, create new associations, offer interpretations. These videos demand a fair degree of decoding, of a type that does not come naturally to me - although I can do it well enough when I put my mind to it. So, I can appreciate those types of vids - but what I really love in vids - what makes me come back again and again - is something far simpler, or perhaps, something more visceral. The most successful vids, for me, are more akin to dance than poetry: motion combined with music in a way that sweeps your gaze along and makes you feel the specific sound and rhythm of the song. (Of course, many videos excel both as dance and as poetry.)

[info]tazey was perhaps the first master of the rhythm/music-oriented vid in Farscape fandom, and, I think, it was her earliest two vids that first made me aware of the use of motion in vidding. I will rec those two vids some other day; today, I will focus on my favourite example of her sadly small output, "The Pain Gets Worse".

BTW: Next rec up? Something non-angsty! Whooooo!

Right! Rec #2! Apologies for the lateness, btw – I was finishing my master's thesis (and then sort of collapsed for a while).

#1: Under Ice, by Birgit

Hmpf rambles:

It is only fitting that I should start my recommendations marathon with the vid that started me on the road to becoming an obsessive vid collector.

"Under Ice" was among the very first vids I downloaded, and it was the first that deeply impressed me. Perhaps I would never have become the collector I am now if it hadn't been for my good luck of finding a treasure like this right away.

This is a short Aeryn/John death/angst vid, focusing on Aeryn, based on a somewhat strange song by Kate Bush. The song is stranger than your average Kate Bush song, and therefore may be difficult to like for some people, but ít fits the theme - grief - and the main character - Aeryn - marvellously. If Aeryn's grief were a song, this is what it would sound like: alien, and harsh, and somewhat dissonant, but strangely beautiful, also.

My biases
fluffy
[info]fs_10percent
No recs journal without biases. These are mine:

* I dislike run-of-the-mill shippy vids, so there will be few of those. I'm not saying there won't be any, because some fairly standard shippy vids are so well done that they impress me regardless of their content. But the percentage of shippy vids featured here will be significantly smaller than it is in the fandom overall.

* I like John angst, Aeryn kicking ass, Scorpius, Harvey, and twisted, or at least unusual ideas, so I'm slightly more willing to forgive imperfections in vids featuring any of these, and may feature them somewhat disproportionally.

* I dislike most standard special effects, so videos containing lots of those will only be featured if they make *exceptionally* good use of them (or if they are based on a a *really* clever, unusual idea.)

* I strongly favour vids that make really good use of rhythm and internal motion.

* I will sometimes - very occasionally - like, and rec a vid that is technically mediocre, simply for a clever idea, or an exceptionally appropriate song choice. When I do, I will say so explicitly. Everything that does *not* come with that type of 'disclaimer', you can assume I consider at the very least very competently edited.

* I have no strong musical biases, and will generally give everything a chance, but a song that I like will ever so slightly increase a vid's chances to turn up here. Nevertheless, I will rec quite a few vids edited to music I do not particularly like. There aren't that many vids that use music that I like, and anyway, good editing can make me tolerate a lot.

This is a recommendations journal for Farscape fanvids.

My name is Hmpf. I have been watching and collecting Farscape fanvids for eight years. There are a lot of Farscape fanvids - some 1,400, give or take a couple hundred. I have watched most of them. I have watched a significant portion of them, probably, slightly more often than can be considered strictly sane.

I am horribly bad at giving feedback.

Starting this journal is supposed to achieve three goals in one fell swoop:

1.) spread the love of wonderful Farscape fanvids;

2.) allow me to *finally* give something back to all the wonderful vidders who have given me so much joy all these years;

3.) turn my solitary collector's obsession to providing a useful resource for the fandom.

For now, this will be a solo project. I'm not trying to compile the objectively 'best' ten percent of all Farscape vids on the net; I'm not trying to compile the most popular ten percent, either. I'm trying to give a very personal account of my own, favourite ten percent of the Farscape vids I know. Ten percent of my collection seems a reasonable percentage for a project that is not supposed to take over my life - although I am sure I could rec more than the maybe 140, 150 vids required to meet the ten percent quota.

I can't say how often I will be posting here. I'm in the middle of finishing uni, and I want to say something appropriate about every vid I rec. I'd rather take a little while to prepare a posting than rush it and just write one vague sentence. That said, I'll probably not write long reviews or clever essays about each vid here. Short, and - hopefully - sweet. ;-) is the idea.
